Enough of fish for the year

Posted by mei | Posted in Food, Travelling | Posted on 03-11-2011

The staple food for icelanders are mainly fish and lamb. It is because of their weather, and their soil, other meats have to be imported. So, if you are planning on eating Beef, or Chicken, be ready to pay a bomb for it!

So back to my holiday in Iceland, in the last 6 days in Iceland, all we had was fish, fish, and fish, occasionally we had Lamb. Oh not to forget, we also had the chance to try minke whale!!

Having said that, there are a huge variety of fishes available, and most of them are caught fresh from the sea daily. We had so much fish in the last few days that I think, Iv had enough for the entire year! Lol.

If you are not a fish eater, you can still have lamb, or pay a higher price for others. Their icelandic hotdogs are delicious too! It comes with fried onions, raw onions, and sauces of your choice, and its yum!!

Malacca for fun

Posted by mei | Posted in Food, Just For Fun, Travelling | Posted on 03-05-2011

I can’t believe I havn’t actually been to Malacca before when I was younger! It was my 1st trip there when I went back for holidays few weeks back *Shameful*

So a friend of ours drove there, we stopped by at seremban for breakfast then carried on the journey, it took us about 2 hours to get there. Malacca is really hot, much hotter compared to KL, so be sure to apply sunblock!!

Malacca is also famous for their food especially their chicken rice balls, baba and nyonya assam laksa and the satay celup – Capitol in particular. Others worth mentioning are the freshly made pineapple tarts and durian puffs (craving now as I write T.T) ~ Yum!

When you go to Malacca, you can’t miss their night market at Jonker Street, it is really lively and they do sell a variety of food, fashion, crafty stuff, and also odd things like utility knives too! There are several pubs and night cafes along the streets as well. But be sure to visit only during the weekends, friday saturday and sunday from 6pm till late midnight, other nights are just dead.

If you can’t stand the heat, there is a mall in the centre of Malacca called the Pahlawan mall, you can just stay indoor with air cond, and pamper yourself with a cup of tea and a slice of Mille Crepe Cake at Nadeja cafe, the cakes are actually made from many layers of crepe with  huge variety of flavours that you can choose from. Do check out my individual post on my food blog.

Overall I’d stay 2 full days would be sufficient to have a taste of Malacca.

Tried beef kobe for the 1st time!

Posted by mei | Posted in Food, Food Indulgence | Posted on 01-04-2011

Today, I had the priveledge to try Beef Kobe @ Yuzu, Japanese Restaurant at Gardens Mid Valley.

I did some research before suggesting a place for dinner for my friend and I, and after hopping on several blogs, I realised Yuzu is a good option for delicious Beef Kobe.

Besides Beef Kobe, we ordered a set meal that came with sashimi, sushi nigiri, chawan mushi, soup, tempura, stoned grilled beef with salad and fruits. We also ordered spicy soft shell crab roll to share.

This is the most expensive meal I have ever had in my life! The bill came up to Rm200++, but really it was the beef kobe that costs a bomb! However, it was the best beef I have ever tasted in my life. Pictures will be uploaded on my food blog, some time soon. Stay tune.

Steamboat!!

Yes, it’s hotpot time again! It’s been 3 months ago since I last had it, during new year.

Whilst I was at work, 2 very nice friends went to Exeter St Thomas to get all that food, since they were off, so when I got home, everything was almost ready, wee!

This time, I had it with Malaysians instead of my hong kong friends, so the ingredients were slightly different. Malaysians use a lot more balls – pork, beef, fish etc as you can see!!

But, can you see what’s missing???

Sliced beef and sliced lamb!! I am so used to having the hong kong style steamboat that I must have them, so the steamboat wasn’t as satisfying, though, it was still a good meal! We had lots of various balls and vegetables though!

Is fei ngau (sliced beef) a must for your hotpot??

KFC hot wings

I have been really unhealthy recently. Every time when I am in town waiting for the bus to go home, I can’t help it but go into KFC to get Hot Wings. Hot wings are my favourite snack alongside popcorn chicken. Today, I was feeling knackered after work, can’t be bothered to cook, so I bought 2 packet of hot wings (comes in 3), and that was my dinner.

Do you like hot wings from KFC??

Nando’s @ Exeter

Posted by mei | Posted in Food | Posted on 26-02-2011

The other night, after unloading all our goodies back at home, rested our tired legs for a bit, went online to look for reporting tools for a friend, then we headed back out to town for a nice portugese roast chicken meal. I am not very keen in Nando’s but I don’t mind it, as we have it in Malaysia as well. I was surprise there aren’t any nando’s in Hong Kong, most of my hongkie friends love Nando’s so much so that every time we are in the city, they would opt for nando’s  over anything else.

Every time I come to nando’s   I will order my favourite portugese custard tart without fail, and of course the chicken leg with mango and lime flavour, with peri-peri flavoured fries, and mash potato.

Pizza hut @ Plymouth

Posted by mei | Posted in Food | Posted on 26-02-2011

Awhile ago during xmas period, after few hours of shopping at Exeter, we got on the train to Plymouth to meet with the rest for bowling. My friend managed to book 3 games for £6, bargain! After that, we went across to Pizza Hut for our dinner.

Pizza hut will always be my last option no matter what. What made me decide on having pizza then?? We only have a few choices really, either nando’s which I have had the night before, Frankie and benny’s (had it few weeks ago, and didn’t like it) or Pizza hut.

I thought I’ll go for pizza hut, because I can have their chicken wings! Their wings is the only thing that motivated me to go there, and also we were very hungry already, any food will do when I am hungry! Ha ha.

Meat feast pizza with stuffed crust base, Super supreme pizza, Chicken pasta, BBQ wings

Tesco’s online shopping

Posted by mei | Posted in Food, my life updates, shopping | Posted on 26-02-2011

It has been such a long time since I last bought groceries, because I haven’t been cooking at all! So because I had a day off today and I wasn’t going to travel anywhere,  I thought it is time to do a bit of cleaning up, so to motivate myself to get up early in the morning, I booked a delivery slot at 10am.

Tesco’s have been really good, they were never late, and the food they sent were always fresh, and if any items were not in stock, they would always give me an alternative, and I can take it or return it.

DSC08123

I normally buy a lot more than this, but this time I was being sensible, only order the necessity and what I can finish, online shopping can be addictive, and ordering when you are hungry is a bad idea, so I always try to order before I go to bed, so I won’t have much cravings.

Do you do your grocery shopping online at all??

Batchelor’s cup a soup

DSC08127

Normally I would buy the batchelor’s can soup, but this time I thought I’d try the cup a soup sachets, because you just need to add boiling water to it, so easy, it saves a lot of work when you are really hungry, and I also bring this to work, have it with bread. Cheap and nice.

However, I have to admit the can soup is tastier, so If I am having pasta, I would prefer to use the condensed can soup, not the sachets.

Egg tarts from China Town, London

Posted by mei | Posted in Food, Food Indulgence | Posted on 24-02-2011

Every time when I come back from London, I have to think of ways to get rid of belly fat! Why?? Because all I do in London is eat, eat and eat, then I would also bring back lots of nice food that I can’t get here in Torquay, including Egg tarts, without fail! I miss them so much, with Chinese tea!! Best-est dessert ever. Well there are 2 different types of base, one more oily called ‘sou pei’ the other is the biscuit and more solid base.

DSC07981

I have always bought the Sou pei, but this time I had both. I thought the sou pei actually taste better, but it is much more oily indeed, the other biscuit base egg tart is easier to carry and bring home, because it is more solid, even after dropping the box several times on the floor, the egg tart is still intact as one!

Actually both are equally good. Which egg tart do you prefer??
